Research and creative activity access

Request for access to SFA facilities for essential research/creative activity Summer 2020

As part of the phased ramp-up of research at UConn that is presently underway, faculty, staff, and in certain cases graduate students may request access to SFA facilities to undertake essential research and creative activity – that is, work the delay of which would have a severe impact on the timely completion of, or preparation for, performances, publications, exhibitions, grant-funded research etc. to which commitments have already been made.

Please read the document ‘School of Fine Arts: Policies and procedures for resumption of on-campus research/creative activity after May 20′, available on the SFA website’s Covid-19 Resources page, before completing this form. Given the need to maintain the lowest possible density of occupation in all buildings at the present time, each request will need to be carefully evaluated, not only on its own merits, but in the context of how many such requests we receive – if it is a large number, we may not be able to approve even some otherwise reasonable requests. Please give careful thought before applying as to whether the access you request is truly essential, or if there may be an alternative way to complete the work that does not require the use of SFA facilities.

For those of you whose work relies heavily on library resources, it should be noted that the UConn Libraries does not anticipate being able to re-open any of its physical spaces over the summer, including the Music & Dramatic Arts Library in our building. The possibility of limited retrieval and/or scanning of physical materials for borrowers is under discussion, but it is not certain that these services will be available.

This form should be completed by:

  1. Any individual seeking access to SFA facilities for their own solo or collaborative research work;

  1. Any individual who requires access to SFA facilities to manage or maintain a workshop, lab, or other resource essential to support the research work of others.

Staff or faculty PIs who need to supervise or conduct work in a lab or workshop that they manage/direct are required as part of the individual request process to upload within the form a completed Covid-19 Safety Plan, the template for which may be found from the SFA Covid-19 Resources page. This plan need be submitted only once for each such space, but every person who needs to work in the space must submit their own individual access request; no individual will be allowed to access the space for research until the responsible manager/PI has submitted a Safety Plan and it has been approved.

Once completed, this request form will be sent to Assistant Dean Colleen Bridgeman and Associate Dean Alain Frogley for review.

For graduate students only:

Submit this form only if you have discussed the request first with your Major Advisor (or Department Head if Major Advisor cannot be contacted), and they have agreed to write a brief letter in support of your application.

The supporting letter should explain why access to SFA facilities is essential to the timely progress of your degree program, or to other essential research, including faculty projects with which you are formally assisting (e.g. grant-funded or other sponsored research).

Once you have obtained the supporting letter it should be uploaded as part of your submission of the access request form.
